UAE and Sweden Dismantle Crypto Contract Killing Laundering Ring

International law enforcement cooperation between the UAE and Sweden has dismantled a Sweden-based gang that laundered money from organized crime sources using cryptocurrency that also had links to a hit network.

According to the UAE Ministry of Interior, during a joint operation, authorities apprehended seven individuals linked to the gang: the leader, arrested in the UAE after fleeing Sweden facing an Interpol red notice; and six other members, detained in Sweden at the same time. UAE authorities did not disclose the identities of the individuals arrested.

Investigations linked the group to money laundering operations that used cryptocurrency to move funds obtained from illicit activities. Over $7 million was handled and laundered by the gang, which was also linked to other crimes.

“The tracing of cryptocurrency transactions and analysis of digital evidence also helped uncover financial links to other criminal activities, including organized crime and contract killings,” UAE authorities declared, hinting at the possibility of crypto-for-murder exchanges.

Brigadier Abdulaziz Al Ahmad, Director General of the Federal Criminal Police at the Ministry of Interior, underscored the effective cooperation between the UAE and Sweden, and stated that exchanging information was paramount to pursuing international crime networks like the one dismantled.

“In cooperation with its international partners, the UAE will continue to track criminal networks, disrupt their sources of financing, and take legal action against anyone seeking to exploit the country’s territory for criminal activities,” he stated, highlighting the UAE’s commitment to law enforcement operations.

Anders Wiberg, Police Commissioner and Head of the International Division of the Swedish Police Authority, expressed his “sincere gratitude to the UAE authorities for their valuable cooperation and support” after the operation’s positive outcome.

The operation is aligned with the UAE’s National Strategy for Anti-Money Laundering, Countering the Financing of Terrorism and Proliferation Financing for 2024-27, which focuses on preventing risks posed by virtual assets and rapidly advancing forms of cybercrime.
