Taiwan to roll out crypto travel rule for domestic transfers soon

0

Crypto transfers within Taiwan are about to get a lot more traceable. Starting in October, the island’s Financial Supervisory Commission(FSC) will require local virtual asset service providers to exchange identifying details on both senders and recipients whenever a single transaction tops NT$30,000, around $1,320, according to local news media reports.

Individuals and businesses face different documentation requirements under the plan. Someone sending crypto above the threshold will need to hand over their date of birth and home address so the platform on the receiving end can confirm who they are. Corporate senders, by contrast, will be asked to provide an official identification number along with their registered business address.

Behind this move sits a broader international standard known as the Travel Rule, first put forward by the Financial Action Task Force as a tool against money laundering and terrorist financing. The basic idea mirrors how traditional bank wires already work, transaction data should travel alongside the funds themselves, giving regulators a way to trace where money originates and where it ends up. Taiwan’s version goes a step further on the receiving end, requiring platforms not just to collect this information but to actively check it against records they already hold for that customer, catching any inconsistencies before the transaction clears.

However, October’s rollout won’t cover everything at once. Transfers involving platforms based outside Taiwan are excluded for now, with only domestic-to-domestic transactions subject to the new rule. Regulators built in this gap deliberately, giving local exchanges and other VASPs breathing room to update their systems before the requirements widen. By the end of 2027, authorities plan to bring overseas transfers into scope as well, a step that would push Taiwan’s crypto compliance framework closer to the standards already in place across much of the rest of the world.
