Amazon ditches GrubHub for Uber Eats, effective immediately

0

Goodbye, GrubHub. Hello, Uber Eats.

That’s what Amazon is saying in a Thursday announcement about its new partnership with Uber’s popular food delivery service.

Amazon Prime subscribers will now be able to order from their favorite restaurants directly through Amazon’s website thanks to a new deal between Uber Eats and Amazon.

There are additional bonuses for Amazon Prime users as well. For one, Amazon Prime subscribers won’t even need an Uber Eats account in order to use the service, as the whole process will take place on Amazon’s website.

If you already have an Uber Eats account, that part of the partnership might not seem all that enticing. However, maybe this part will: Amazon Prime subscribers will also pay $0 on delivery fees for all orders of $25 or more as part of the partnership.

Amazon and Uber will also be providing Prime members with a limited-time offer to celebrate the partnership. Over the next two weeks, Prime subscribers can get $20 off their first two Uber Eats orders of $25 or more.

While the order receipt will come from Uber Eats, Amazon will handle everything else for Prime users ordering delivery. The order process and delivery alerts will also come from Amazon.

Amazon originally entered the food delivery business with Amazon Restaurants, which was an in-house service provided by the company. However, in 2019, Amazon shuttered Amazon Restaurants and opted to instead partner with food delivery companies.

In 2022, Amazon announced a new partnership with GrubHub, which provided Amazon Prime users with a free GrubHub+ subscription. Two years later, in 2024, Amazon and Grubhub extended their partnership, making the Grubhub+ membership an ongoing perk for Prime members.

With the UberEats deal, Amazon’s relationship with GrubHub is coming to an end. Both Amazon and GrubHub have confirmed that the partnership between the two companies will end on Thursday.

Ditching GrubHub for UberEats makes sense for Amazon. Amazon Prime perks are there to encourage its customers to keep their paid subscription active. According to a report from Foodspark, Uber Eats has between 23 and 26 percent share of the U.S. food delivery market. GrubHub only captures between 6 and 8 percent. This makes the new Amazon Prime offering much more appealing to a larger portion of its customer base.
