Just days after stepping back from running his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) for Donald Trump, Elon Musk has been openly critical of Trump’s tax and spending bill, writing on X, “This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination.” Though Trump hasn’t publicly reacted, reports suggest conditions are stormy.
It’s quite the U-turn for Musk, who spent almost $300 million to get Trump elected, then fired over 280,000 government workers through DOGE and shuttered government agencies, including USAID, among other things. But he got a key, at least.
On Late Night, Seth Meyers took “A Closer Look” at Musk and Trump’s relationship and time together in the Oval Office, and it’s hard to believe it’s all over four months.
“Clearly for Elon Musk, this was all about power and self-enrichment because when it comes to his actual stated beliefs, the things he claims to care about, he achieved nothing,” said Meyers. “And in the process, he was used and discarded by so many before him by Donald Trump.”
