Buying A House That Has A Bad History

by Razvan Marian on Jun 11, 2010

One of the issues often overlooked by homebuyers, but when discovered it is very important to their decision of buying a property, is if somebody had passed away in the house. It is quite logical why many of us do not think about this issue when entering a home for the first time; it is something very unpleasant that often gets buried in our subconscious and left there. In addition, many people get scared away after they hear that somebody had died in that house and most likely will not purchase it, even though the home may be in perfect condition. Let us say, for example, that you were looking at available homes in Florida and in this process, you had found an excellent piece real estate property. However, let us also say that you find out in the disclosure details from the seller that the previous owner had died there. Many of us will change our minds after we hear that somebody passed away in the home, while a small amount of others will ignore this issue. The next logical question would have to be: should you think about not purchasing that real estate? The following will offer you four additional questions that might make your life easier. Why did the seller of the property die? Death is a fact of life; that will always be a given. The real question is what makes the death of a seller so undesirable to deal with when buying a real estate property? Finding out the exact cause of the death can open up new questions about the home you are considering buying, especially if it is something that is both shocking and gruesome. If the seller had died of old age, in his sleep, you probably will not feel so threatened, as natural death is typically nothing to worry about. Find out the cause of death and you may find the answer to the question of whether you should go through with buying the house. Does the cause of death have anything to do with the actual house? ”“ The owner might have died because of some rickety stairs or he might have slipped in the bathroom because the tiles are too slippery when wet. Of course, some accidents are just accidents and some of them could be prevented with minor modifications to the house. Was the death violent or not? ”“Even if an unfortunate incident does not lead to the actual death, like a violent robbery for example, it would still make you question whether property is safe or not. What you need to do is start looking at the nearby vicinity, check to see if there are dark alleys, abandoned buildings or vacant lots, as these could very well attract criminals. Are the owners disruptive? ”“ Check with the neighbors and the police to see if the former owners were the authors of criminal activities or if they organized rowdy and trivial parties, along with other similar activities. For example, has the house been occupied by meth addicts? It would be worth having the house checked for toxic substances that meth labs usually suffer from; you never know what you might discover. As you can see, there are a lot of issues that should be of real concern when considering purchasing a home in which, in the past, somebody has died. Be sure to check all potential problems in order to make sure that you will be completely comfortable in your new house; otherwise it might be a complete nightmare.
