Keyless Entry Remote Basics

by James Jacob on Jun 18, 2010

Keyless entry remote is especially useful for luxury cars as with the click of a button a car is armed and other security features are activated simultaneously. If the car is disturbed in any way after being armed, lights will flash and sounds will activate. Basically this system works by broadcasting radio waves from your remote system to the vehicle. In today's world there are specific encryptions which will keep hackers from trying to intercept the signals and ultimately steal your vehicle. During the 1980s the door handle of a vehicle would have a device which would allow the driver to enter a pre-programmed code into the user pad on the handle, which would result in the door getting unlocked. Nowadays, remote alarm systems are the in thing and having such keypads on door handles has become unnecessary. There is no doubt that the remote is a lot more useful than the keypad entry as all you have to do is press a button and not remember an actual code and enter it into the keypad. The remote can also unlock a vehicle from a distance, as the signal travels 30 feet (9m) or more, hence the name "remote entry." A keyless entry system is pretty useful when you are approaching the car with bags of grocery and what not, or have a toddler clinging on to you; it proves extremely useful to unlock the doors with the press of a button instead of an elaborate lock and key operation. The buttons may also be used to open the trunk of the car and if it's raining there is nothing more useful than keyless entry. Keyless entry operators also have advanced features like remote starting. This will allow you to get the engine started from a certain distance even without getting in or unlocking the vehicle. For example, if you live in an icy area, you could get the heater inside the car started even before you have got inside the car and this helps your cause immensely. Or if you live in hot conditions, you could let the air conditioning run from before, allowing you to step into a cooler atmosphere immediately as you get in the car. An important part of the system is the key fob, which holds the electronic components of the remote system. Without this part the keyless entry system would not be able to emit the signals that are necessary to lock or unlock the vehicle. There are even more technologically advanced key fobs available today that have a chip embedded in the plastic head of the key and without which the vehicle would not start. You have to keep in mind that if you have simply lost or broken your remote or key fob, you do not necessarily need to buy another one from the manufacturer. There are a lot of wholesale websites from where you can purchase a remote or a replacement key fob for well below the manufacturers price.
